Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to challenge certain rulings made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
