Trump Calls for Jailing of Windy City Leader and Illinois Governor as National Guard Arrive in City

Ex-President Donald J. Trump on midweek called for the incarceration of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of not safeguarding ICE agents.

"The city's leader belongs behind bars for failing to secure ICE Officers!" Trump wrote on social media early Wednesday. "The Illinois governor too!"

Both officials identify as the Democratic faction.

These remarks come alongside the deployment of National Guard personnel in the Windy City area under orders from the federal administration, notwithstanding vehement protests from state officials including the governor and mayor.

"This marks yet another attempt where Trump attempted to have a Black man unjustly detained," Mayor Johnson stated on Wednesday. "I'm not going anywhere."

The governor responded via social platforms, declaring: "I refuse to yield. Now Trump is calling for imprisonment of democratically chosen representatives resisting his authority. What's next on the road toward full-blown authoritarianism?"

As of midweek, military troops from the Lone Star State had arrived at the Elwood army reserve center, an army base roughly 80 kilometers from Chicago, as the administration advances with its aggressive urban crime policy and mass deportation efforts.

The president has called Chicago a "crime-ridden hellhole", even though police data indicate significant drops in many offenses, including homicides.

On Wednesday, 200 state guard members were expected to deploy to the region, with another 300 state military personnel readying for deployment, per sources. Authorities reportedly stated the soldiers would avoid police functions but would secure federal immigration agents and government buildings.

Soldiers in combat attire with state guard patches were observed at the military facility in Elwood. Vehicles marked "Emergency Disaster Services" dropped off portable toilets and other supplies. Trailers were arranged in lines. Extra barriers was installed around the perimeter.

Aviation authorities ordered flight restrictions over the army reserve center for safety concerns until 6 December.

Federal authorities has intensified immigration enforcement in Chicago in the past month, sparking demonstrations, particularly near an immigration center in a Chicago suburb.

On Monday, state and city filed a lawsuit against the federal government, attempting to halt the military dispatch, asking a court to stop what they call "Trump's long-declared 'War'" on the city and state, labeling it "illegal and dangerous".

A court hearing on their lawsuit is set for the next day.

Mayor Johnson also signed an directive on Monday prohibiting ICE officers and related personnel from using city-owned property as operation bases for deportation efforts.

Pritzker has accused the president of using military forces as "staged tools" and "chess pieces".

At a news conference on Tuesday, he said that the president is trying to "rationalize and normalize the deployment of armed soldiers under his direct command."

The historic federal law limits the military's role in enforcing domestic laws. However, Trump has said he would be prepared to invoke the Insurrection Act, which permits a president to send active duty military in states that are failing to put down an uprising or are resisting federal law.

Since starting his new administration, the president has dispatched or mentioned deploying troops to at least 10 urban centers, including major metropolitan areas and West Coast locations like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, claiming that the military presence is necessary to combat crime and protect immigration agents.

Data indicates that serious offenses nationwide has decreased in recent years. In Chicago, for instance, homicides were reduced nearly one-third to under three hundred through August, according to law enforcement reports.

New survey data released on that day revealed that most Americans disapprove of the deployment of troops without an external threat.
