People who experienced abuse by church officials have expressed fresh optimism after their initial encounter with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, heading the anti-abuse organization, commented that the Pope's decision to meet with them so early in his leadership spoke volumes about his dedication to tackling the issue.

Global Strict Approach Pushed

The group is advocating for a worldwide zero-tolerance policy that would permanently remove any clergy member who confesses to or is found guilty of abusing a child. This policy has been implemented in the United States.

The Pope acknowledged that there is "resistance in certain regions of the globe" to this proposal, according to Hickey.

"Everyone was practical when we recognized that there is pushback," Hickey remarked.

Legacy Challenge

The new Pope, who assumed the position in May, has taken on this longstanding issue that has plagued the Church for decades.

Earlier attempts to resolve the situation included an historic meeting on child abuse within the institution and changes to church laws to explicitly criminalize sexual abuse.

Deeply Felt Connection

For the representative, who prefers gender-neutral pronouns, the drive for global implementation of the policy is personal. The North American activist shared they were abused by a clergy member who was later moved between various churches.

"We trust this will set the tone for his leadership, because we want to work with him," they stated. "We have the common objective, we seek to end clergy abuse."

Historic Meeting

Seven members of the coalition, which includes victims and advocates from more than 30 countries, engaged with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The discussion, initially planned for 20 minutes, lasted to a full hour, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was described as "very understanding" when listening to the account of a woman abused at a Catholic residential school for native youth in North America.

They added the Pope was "compassionate" about their own story and appeared "modest, funny, and very down to earth."

"Victims have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was making empty promises," Hickey commented. "I believed like he was sincere, realistic, and very open and eager to collaborate with us."

Canon Law Changes

The organization is hoping that revisions to canon law will facilitate the adoption of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have consulted experts and compiled materials that they plan to submit to the pontiff.

"He seemed interested in looking at it," Hickey remarked.

Accountability Highlighted

A recent church-ordered report highlighted the "necessity of a streamlined protocol for the stepping down and/or removal of Church leaders or personnel in cases of abuse or negligence."

The report also pointed out that survivors consistently emphasized the "critical requirement for bishops and senior officials to be held accountable for negligence and concealment."

Path Ahead

The representative shared they told the pontiff at the start of their meeting: "This is as much a challenge for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

Following the encounter, they expressed optimism for future change.

"We realise it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the conclusion, uniting and building a relationship and persisting to build that bond is a step in the correct path," Hickey stated.

Hickey concluded that they told with Pope Leo: "Just because it's a dark chapter, I feel like we can alter how the story ends - he appreciated that."
