A group of seven accused members of German far-left organization stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was behind targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or remain detained.”
